縮合多環πラジカル

身近によく見られる磁石はサマリウム(Sm)、ネオジム(Nd)、鉄、コバルトなどの無機物が主体であり、それらの原子軌道を占める電子スピンを直接利用した物である。その磁性は各原子に基づいており、原子磁性と言うこともできる。それに対し、有機物は主に分子として存在するため、電子スピンを有機物に存在させた場合は、電子スピンは分子軌道を占めることになり、その磁性は分子磁性と言うことができる。有機物の特徴の一つに分子設計のしやすさとその多様性が挙げられ、様々な分子を設計することにより、多様な分子磁性体を詳細に調べることができる。当研究室では、安定な中性ラジカル、ならびに電子スピンを複数個有する高スピン分子の分子設計・合成を行い、分子間並びに分子内スピン間相互作用を調べている。

プロトン-電子連動系

分子間に形成された水素結合のプロトンの挙動は、周りの分子の電荷分布に著しく依存する。当研究室では、周りの電子状態と水素結合との関係を明確にして、電子-プロトン相互作用の持つ意義を明らかにし、外部刺激に対しプロトンと電子が柔軟に応答する分子の設計・合成を行っている。電子とプロトンの連動した分子間移動は、これからの材料開発に新しい一つの指針を与えるだけでなく、電子とプロトンの二つの電荷の自由度を持った素子機能の開発に大いに役立つと考えられる。
