Research Interests

Akira Inaba received his B. Sc., M. Sc. and D. Sc. from Osaka University where he studied under Professor Hideaki Chihara. After four years at National Research Laboratory for Metrology in Tokyo (now in Tsukuba), he joined the faculty of Osaka University in 1980. He has spent a research leave for two years at McMaster University in Canada where he worked with Professor James A. Morrison. Dr. Inaba received the James J. Christensen Memorial Award in 2000.

The research of Dr. Inaba covers a wide range of topics dealing with various types of condensed matter. The techniques that are employed to investigate the structure and dynamics are calorimetry, neutron scattering, X-ray diffraction and molecular dynamics simulation. Current research includes studies of adsorbed monolayers formed at gas-solid and solid-liquid interfaces. He has been interested in the "order and complexity" created at those interfaces. The highlight of his work is the finding of new types of phase transitions and the understanding of energy excitations such as the one associated with rotational tunneling. Dr. Inaba is also interested in novel bulk materials such as quasicrystals and C60 polymers.
