Development and Property Investigation of Metal Complexes containing Polythiol ligand

Organic ligands containing more than two thiol groups (polythiols) are expected to yield stable metal complexes due to their ability to form stable chelating bonds on the metal centre through multiple sulfur donor atoms.

Recently, through the reaction of dithioglycerol (G-2S(A)) with a diphosphino digold precursor complex, we succesfully prepared a digold complex coordinated by dithiol and diphosphine on each end. Interstingly, we observe a systematic change in emission profile as the carbon backbone length of the diphosphine ligands increased, along with increased in molecular twisting. This is believed to be due to the difference in aurophillic interactions arising from the molecular twisting. Such molecular design strategies based on controlled molecular twisting would be a new approach for the design of new luminescent materials.
