Research activities at the Research Center for Molecular Thermodynamics, some of which can be found in separate pages, are progressing steadily. Professor Yasuhiro Nakazawa, who was appointed as of April 1, 2005, joined us also as one of the staff members from the Physical Chemistry Area of the Chemistry Course. Professor Keiichiro Adachi and Professor Kazuhiro Nakasuji were retired from the Steering Committee on March 31, 2005. The committee has been renewed since then and the current member consists of Professors Koichi Fukase (natural product chemistry), Toshio Kasai (reaction dynamics), Yasuhiro Nakazawa (solid state physical chemistry), Takahiro Sato (macromolecular science), Hitoshi Watarai (analytical chemistry), Kizashi Yamaguchi (quantum chemistry), and myself (structural thermodynamics). The staffs and post-doctral fellow as of November 7, 2005 are as follows:
| Prof., Director | INABA, Akira | D.Sc. |
| Prof.* | NAKAZAWA, Yasuhiro | D.Sc. |
| Asst. Prof. | NAGANO, Yatsuhisa | D.Sc. |
| Asst. Prof. | TAKAKURA, Hiroyuki | D.Sc. |
| Res. Assoc. | MIYAZAKI, Yuji | D.Sc. |
| Post Doctoral | SAKISATO, Naoki | D.Sc. |
| Visiting Scientist | KRAWCZYK, Jan | Ph.D |
| Adm. Official | HOSOKAWA, Hiroko |
The position marked with * belongs to the Physical Chemistry Area of the Chemistry Course, Graduate School of Science. The list of students is as follows:
In accordance with the Program for Visiting Scientists from Foreign Countries, we accepted Dr. Ove Andersson (Umeå University in Sweden, from September 13 to November 10, 2004), Prof. Christoph Schick (University of Rostock in Germany, from January 19 to February 25, 2005), Dr. Christoph Meingast (Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe in Germany, from May 9 to June 9, 2005), and Dr. Jan Krawczyk (Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kraków in Poland, from September 7, 2005). The research projects that we shared are “Thermodynamics Studies under High Pressure” with Dr. Ove Andersson, “Kinetics of Polymers at the Melting Point” with Prof. Christoph Schick, “Thermal Property of Solids by Precise Measurement of Expansivity” with Dr. Christoph Meingast, and “Thermodynamic Studies of Solid State Polymorphism of Some Organic Glass Formers” with Dr. Jan Krawczyk. All the projects are, in fact, extended further to continue the collaboration.
This year, Inaba attended the Russian XV International Conference on Chemical Thermodynamics (RCCT-2005) held in Moscow, Russia to give a plenary lecture “Quasicrystalas and the Related Crystals – Their Lattice Vibration and Phase Transition –”. He also attended the 40th IUPAC Congress held in Beijing, China to give an invited lecture “Structure and Phase Behavior of 2-D Solids Formed at Interfaces”. This paper will be published in Pure and Applied Chemistry in next year. Dr. Miyazaki attended the 60th Calorimetry Conference (CALCON2005) to give an invited lecture “Heat Capacity Studies on Molecule-Based Magnets”. Emeritus Prof. Matsuo attended the 16th International Conference, Horizons in Hydrogen Bond Research, which was held in Roskilde, Denmark, to present a paper. The list of papers presented in International/National Conferences as well as the list of papers published can be found in separate pages.
During the last one year, a D.Sc. has been granted to the graduate student.
