I have had a dream of writing a book of thermodynamics concretely demonstrating its important roles for sound understanding of materials and natural phenomena. As a retirement project, I decided to write such a book. The book cover is illustrated in the next page and its contents are as follows:
| Chap. 1 | What is Molecular Thermodynamics? |
| Chap. 2 | Heat Capacity and Its Measurements |
| Chap. 3 | Phase Transitions |
| Chap. 4 | Molecular Crystals and Orientational Phase Transitions |
| Chap. 5 | Phase Transitions in Liquid Crystals |
| Chap. 6 | Molecular Magnets and Magnetic Phase Transitions |
| Chap. 7 | Spin Crossover Phenomena and Phase Transitions |
| Chap. 8 | Phase Transitions due to Charge Transfer |
| Chap. 9 | Thermochromism and Phase Transitions |
This is not a textbook but a reference book of thermodynamics for deeper understanding, in particular placing great emphasis upon quantitative relationship between macroscopic thermodynamic quantities and the events occurring at microscopic molecular levels. It is a great pleasure for me to be able to write this book with the title prefixed by the word “Molecular Thermodynamics”, a part of the name of the institute “Research Center for Molecular Thermodynamics”. Unfortunately I have no plan for publication of its English version.
Research results picked up in the book are based on collaborations with many people, to whom thanks are due. My thanks go to the editorial staff M. Kawabata and M. Ono, without their faith in the book it could not have been accomplished.
