Research Interests

  1. Synthesis and measurement of single molecule nanocomponents.
  2. Self-ordering of nanostructures on solid surfaces.
  3. Development of new SPM techniques for molecular electronics.
  4. Fabrication of nanoscale devices that employ the self-ordering properties of molecules.

Molecular-scale electronics are a relatively new and important area of research, and both fundamental principles and applied studies are currently under pursuit. Our group approaches the development of molecular-scale electronics by employing the self-ordering properties of conductive nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes, metal nanorods, and metal nanoparticles) and functional organic molecules. At the same time, new methodologies are required to study nanomaterials on the molecular scale. Through these methods, we have realized a molecular-scale rectifier composed of organic molecules and carbon nanotubes, and molecular-scale photoswitches that employ molecular wires and gold nanoparticles. We are the first group to succeed in aligning long molecular wires in a linear geometry on an insulating solid surface through the self-ordering properties of the molecules.
