When spherical rigid particles or ellipsoidal particles, such as atoms and ions, aggregate into a solid, the space is not filled completely, leaving gaps (void spaces) depending on the particle arrangement. Our group synthesizes nanosized spherical polynuclear metal complexes using a stepwise aggregation method of metal ions (metalloligand approach) and develops crystals with void spaces (metal cluster assemblages) by aggregating polynuclear metal complexes through supramolecular interactions. Metal cluster assemblages are soluble in solvents and can be easily modified to adjust the internal surface of the pores. Therefore, within the metal cluster assemblages, diffusion phenomena fundamentally different from those in existing porous materials occur, enabling unique chemical reactions and electronic states.
